Along with new substances, such as HFOs, companies are also looking to use lower GWP HFCs in their applications, particularly as transition substances to future refrigerants.

Their strategy is to choose a substance with which the industry is broadly familiar and use it until future technology becomes available, less expensive and any potential issues are more clearly understood.

The use of R32 in split system air conditioners is an example of this approach.
